Although it’s powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the X1 features a unique panel interface that gives users one-touch access to games, applications, and Web features. Sony Ericsson has released software development kits to help spur the developer community to create new and innovative panels.

The outside of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 features an eye-catcher we have requested for a long time from Sony Ericsson with regards to its Walkman music phones; a 3.5mm plug for earphones. This is a first for Sony Ericsson, unique for any Windows Mobile-based phone. Most of the phone is solidly built with a metal shell, but the front button are made of almost ridiculously unstable plastic.

A fun feature of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is the navigation cross, with a central button that doubles as a touchpad. Now you use it for scrolling instead. Another use for that same navigation cross when the keyboard is extended, since there are no directional arrows in the keyboard.
Apart from that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1’s keyboard is good, with slightly raised separate keys sitting a millimeter apart. It’s rather comfortable to write on.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 has a little more RAM and the display is 800×480. This gives the screen, and consequently the entire X1, a slightly longer and more narrow shell, which also explain the lack of dedicated number keys on the keyboard.

The Windows mobile base in the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 has, like all Windows Mobile-based touchscreen phones, been supplemented with a homegrown graphical interface called the X-Panel, since the system itself is the textbook definition of the word clutter.

The X-Panel consists of a number of different start screens shown either as a grid or as a fan. The only screen you cannot replace with any of the built-in (or downloadable) alternate designs is the main Today screen that acts as Windows Mobile’s foundation. Applications include a media file drawer we’ve seen in other Sony Ericsson models, a calendar screen, radio, Google search and so on.

The long-awaited Sony Xperia X1 will be available in the United States for $799 unlocked at Sony Style stores and authorized retailers beginning Nov. 28.

The N810 is a Linux-based mobile device, offers an assortment of new features. The N810 also ships with Internet Tablet OS 2008—the new version of Nokia’s Internet Tablet operating system— built on Maemo 4.0.
 
The Nokia N810 has a thumb keyboard that slides down from the device and a built-in GPS receiver. Despite the added features, the N810 is noticeably smaller than the N800 and fits better in a pocket. The bezel around the screen is slimmer on the N810 and most of the buttons have been moved off of the face of the device. The whole thing looks sleeker and more attractive. The directional pad is smaller and is placed to the left of the keyboard on the sliding panel. The menu button is right below the directional pad. The escape and home buttons are still on the front of the device, but they are on a single slim rocker button that runs along the left side.

 
The N810’s external memory card slot is designed for MiniSD cards rather than standard SD cards.  It is 2GB total, and approximately 1.5GB is already consumed by maps for the GPS software.On the top of the N810, the zoom buttons are on a rocker by themselves and the full-screen button—which was placed between the zoom buttons on the N800—is a slight distance to the left of the zoom rocker. The power button—which is now round—is at the very center, and a new sliding lock button has been added to the right of the power button.

The N810 webcam is embedded in the face. Right above the webcam on the N810 is an ambient light sensor, which the software uses to automatically adjust screen brightness and keyboard backlighting. The top left corner of the N810 has a big notification light that will flash in various colors to indicate certain kinds of events, like when new e-mail is received.

The headphone and power adapter jacks are still on the right side of the device beneath the stylus. Like the N800,the N810 still has a stand, which blocks the USB port and memory card slot when closed. The two devices both use the same size power adapter jack, and the chargers are interchangeable. The USB port on the N810 is slightly smaller than the one on the N800. The speaker grills, which are now much smaller, have been moved from the front to the sides.

The N810 display is slightly smaller than the display on the N800, but the difference is barely noticeable. The N800 display is 4.2″, whereas the N810 display is 4.13″. Both run at 800×480, which is impressive for a handheld.

On the inside, the N810 has pretty much the same hardware as the N800. It uses the same TI OMAP 2420 processor. The N800 was clocked to 330Mhz by default, but OS2008 brings up the clock speed to 400 Mhz. The increase in clock speed is controlled by the software, so N800 users who upgrade to OS2008 will get the same boost. Like the N800, the N810 still comes with 128MB of DDR RAM and 256MB of flash memory.

N810 comes with a Price tag of USD: $479.

Nokia has added E63 to its business-oriented Eseries line up,but adds capabilities aimed at the consumer.
 
Nokia explained that the E63 fits the typical Eseries mould, offering Wi-Fi connectivity, easy access to corporate mail, calendar and business contacts, as well as the Qwerty keyboard that is offered with the Nokia E71. But the E63 will also offer a personal mode with a different homescreen picture, personal email and shortcuts to blogs and web sites.

“The Nokia E63 is a new proposition for the Eseries - a messaging device where people will be just as involved in their social network as they are in their business network. Our research shows that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two,” said Nokia senior vice president Soren Petersen.

Users can switch from a view of corporate mail, appointments and intranet data to the personal mode with a single key press, according to the firm.

It is available in dark red or marine blue.

The handset will also include Files on Ovi, a service allowing users to access their PC remotely even when their computer is offline. Nokia said that 1GB of online file storage will be given to all users for free.

Heavy users of mobile phones are 50 percent more likely to develop cancer of the salivary glands, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University and published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Researchers studied 500 Israelis who had tumors of the salivary gland, and compared their cell phone usage to 1300 Israelis who did not have such tumors. They found that those who use cellular phones several hours per day against the same side of the head had a 50 percent higher tumor risk than those who used phones less frequently.

Rural residents with heavy mobile phone use had an even higher tumor risk, compared with urban users. The researchers speculated that this could be due to the higher radiation dose needed for mobile phones to function in areas with fewer towers.

A number of studies have linked heavy mobile phone use the health problems such as sleep disruption and brain cancer. While the mobile phone industry often says that studies have proved the devices safe, the researchers noted that these studies tend to look only a short-term exposure, whereas radiation-related health problems may often take up to a decade before symptoms develop.

The researchers said that carrying out studies in Israel, where the level of mobile phone use (and thus radiation exposure) is very high, can give insight otherwise only available from a longer-term study.

“Compared to other studies, the amount of exposure to radiofrequency radiation we saw here was much higher,” said lead researcher Siegal Sadetzki. “If you like, you’re seeing what could happen elsewhere ’speeded-up’ in Israel.”

The researchers also noted that many studies look only for brain tumors, and not other health problems like the one examined in the current study. This could be because cancer of the salivary gland is normally quite rare, accounting, for example, for only 0.23 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United Kingdom each year.
