First, I heard about Google Android phone (an iPhone competitor) over a year ago. I ended up buy one

First, I heard about Google Android phone (an iPhone competitor) over a year ago. I ended up buy one:-) Awesome phone BTW!

Then, I heard about Google Wave (an email, SMS, twitter, and facebook competitor). I tried to get a beta account, not much luck. It is due to be released next year.

Then, it came Google Voice and recently their 911 call functionality. I got that that one too

It is obvious where Google is heading. It seems to me, they plan to take on everyone – Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, my fat Mama, and telecom companies. Well, taking on Apple, Yahoo, and Microsoft has been going on for past several years or so. Taking on the telecom companies where my educational and half of professional background come from, WOW! That is amazing! Thanks to the power of Internet and Voice over IP.

Certainly, 2010 is going to be an awesome year for Google – particularly for their Android operating system. Because, there are now 20,000 apps available for you to download from their AndroLib site and it is growing fast. Based on all other goodies they offer that others don’t, I won’t be surprised they put their competitors out of business in just a few years from today. It will be fascinating to watch their war with iPhone of Apple. Note that Apple is just about a mobile phone and computer operating system, computer, and internet browser. Google has a couple of those items plus search, google wave and google voice. You own the search and telecom, you own the world. Besides, Google Android is now on many more handset than Apples’.

What’s even more fascinating, is how Google took many of the other traditional mobile phone companies and their operating systems providers like Windows Mobile and Symbian totally off guard and quick. I think they did a fantastic job playing Trojan Horse of the 21st Century.

Everything in this world has at least one flaw and the Samsung Omnia i900 is no exception. One issue

Everything in this world has at least one flaw and the Samsung Omnia i900 is no exception.

One issue I have with the phone is the Samsung proprietary all-in-one port. You charge through it, you sync through it and you plug the earphones through it. So you can’t use all three at the same time…at least not with the stuff that comes in the retail packaging.

One might think that when you sync the phone with the PC, it also gets charged. It is supposed to, but for some reason it doesn’t. It in fact drains the battery rapidly when you plug it into the USB port. So you can’t keep it plugged in for more than few minutes. Let’s say even that is not a big problem. The biggest problem comes when you have to tether! Tethering is using the internet connection on the phone on your PC, making the phone works as a modem. When you do that with the Omnia, at least my Omnia with the suppose- to-be-original USB cable, you can’t browse the internet for more than a few minutes. It sucks!

But what do you think if you have bother the USB cable plugged in and the power cable plugged in. Of course you can’t do that normally, but there is a way. There are docking stations for the Omnia which supports connecting both the power and USB cables. If the USB was not giving enough power to charge the phone, then this method should work, right?

Well…wrong. I ordered a docking station for just $6 from ebay and it arrived today. To my dismay, it didn’t work the way I thought it would. I managed to kill the battery within minutes after docking the phone with both USB and power cables plugged in.

One thing I don’t understand is, why the battery would lose the charge rapidly when the phone is connected through the USB. I mean, just because it doesn’t charge properly – in case it wasn’t getting enough power – doesn’t mean that it should lose power rapidly, right? Could there be a short circuit somewhere?

I read on the internet that one guy fixed the problem by using the Samsung i480’s cable. They say that there is an extra wire connected in the stock Omnia cable compared to that of i480’s. I still have those crappy cables purchased from Pettah. Should give them a try. Just because they can’t FLASH properly doesn’t mean they can’t sync the phone

GREAT We’ve been excited about Augmented Reality (AR) here at GoMo News for some time now. Not merel

GREAT

We’ve been excited about Augmented Reality (AR) here at GoMo News for some time now. Not merely the stuff of sci-fi anymore, the growth of high-speed mobile devices with good cameras, GPS and faster data connections have made it a real possibility. And when one of the most popular travel services in the world gets involved, it’s time to start paying closer attention.

First up, what’s Augmented Reality?

At it’s simplest level, AR means adding a layer of information over the world around you. It means being able to look at a building, and automatically access information about it. It means having a giant arrow in the sky that always points in the direction of your destination. It means being able to being able to access information and articles that someone has left floating in the street.

This is accomplished through all of the technology that is present in the most up-to-date smartphones. High end devices can use GPS to know exactly where you are. They can use accelerometers to know exactly what direction they’re pointing. They can use a camera to see what you see, and display graphical information over it.

Now, at the moment most of the component parts aren’t really fast enough to make AR a real public offering. It’s a bit too clunky at the moment to attract real adoption. But new technologies are emerging every week, and as AR becomes gradually faster we get companies like Lonely Planet releasing services that are genuinely useful and could attract a lot of consumer attention.

So what is the Lonely Planet offering?

As you probably know, Lonely Planet is one of the most widely used travel information services in the world. It publishes comprehensive and friendly guides to pretty much every city, country or destination in the world (I once spent a week in Venice that would have been completely unbearable without my Lonely Planet guide).

Lonely Planet teamed up with one of the more exciting companies working in the field of mobile AR. Mobilizy is responsible for Wikitude.me, which is an AR service maintained by a community of users and editors. Using the Wikitude World Browser, you can pick up information from the world around as you pass by. The two companies worked together, and have launched a new product called Lonely Planet Compass guides.

Available for Android in the US, there are currently ten cities with Compass guides available. The guides allow you to access any information that Lonely Planet has through your phone at the point of interest.

Maybe my favourite function is that you can input your own itinerary on the map beforehand. Then during the day you can simply hold your phone up to see your chosen path displayed before you. Very cool!

So far only Boston, Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle and Washington D.C. have Compass guides, but Lonely Planet promises more titles to come soon.

What we think?

Lonely Planet is providing a much-needed but possibly doomed service here. I’m not truly confident that AR has enough support to make this venture worthwhile. It puts Lonely Planet in an odd position: in order for AR to take off, it needs early adopters to release good services and attract attention. But there might not be enough meat on those bones for Lonely Planet to see a good return from its investment. This is a fairly low-key launch as well. With an initial test pool of ten cities, and the app only available for Android users, I wonder if this just a really gentle launch or if we can expect to see a bigger event later.
