Poland: Netia Aims Higher Following Its Acquisition of Tele2

EVENT SPOTLIGHT

On September 15, 2008, Polands Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKIK) granted Netia, the largest alternative broadband and fixed telephony provider, authorization to acquire Tele2 Polska, another alternative broadband and fixed operator, for roughly US$50m. As a result of the merger, Netia has been able to increase its broadband client base to 400,000 and its fixed voice service client base to more than 1m, thus becoming the leading alternative service provider in Poland. Netias ambitions are to expand its services portfolio, as is evident from its introduction of IPTV and mobile services.

Pyramid Research believes that Netia will be able to improve its performance and challenge TPSAs position, thanks to synergies and economies of scale resulting from the Tele2 merger, the immediate increase of its voice and broadband market share, and its introduction of triple play.

IPTV Success Factors in CEE: Weak Pay-TV Competition, High Broadband Penetration and Affordability

IPTV is on the rise in CEE: Some operators reported promising H1 2008 results, and some are just preparing to launch. Czech Telefónica O2 reported 98,000 IPTV subscribers; In Poland, TPSA had 54,000 IPTV subscribers; Russian Svyazinvest served around 50,000 IPTV customers. IPTV was launched this year in Ukraine and Belarus, and Romanian incumbent Romtelecom is planning to launch IPTV by the end of this year. Alternative operators in several CEE countries have plans to launch IPTV.

It is clear that the success of IPTV has not been even across the region, and this trend is set to continue. The Czech Republic is so far the most successful IPTV market. What makes it so suitable for IPTV? The author believes that IPTV will succeed in relatively wealthy markets with high broadband penetration and low pay-TV competition — such as the Czech Republic and Poland. In markets with low broadband penetration and strong pay-TV competition, such as Romania, IPTV providers would have to offer strong incentives to the customer to make IPTV popular. Russia and some other young broadband and pay-TV markets would have to address the affordability issue to make IPTV truly successful.
