Canada - Telecoms, Wireless & Broadband Overview & Analysis 2007-2008

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The convergence of voice, Internet and TV continues to bring Canadian telecommunication and broadcasting operators together as direct competitors in the emerging triple play market. However, though the cable companies had made strong inroads into VoIP telephony by early 2008, the telco deployments of IPTV were still in their infancy. Broadband and wireless revenues continue to be the star performers, outpacing industry-wide revenue growth by three-to-fourfold. Key revenue drivers include the growth in data and content services whilst broadband revenues are being driven by subscriber numbers and price increases. Nevertheless, wireless penetration remains amongst the lowest in the OECD. Similarly, although Canada had the second highest OECD broadband penetration in 2001, by 2006 it had fallen to ninth place. These score cards were the precursors to deregulation of some markets in 2007. Further regulatory reforms are anticipated for 2008/09. In addition, pro-competitive auction rules for the Advanced Wireless Services spectrum auction in May 2008 should bring a welcome injection of competition into the wireless sector.

Guinea - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Guinea in West Africa has vast mineral resources and is yet one of the poorest countries in the world. Penetration rates in its telecommunications and Internet market are well below the African average. The mobile sector now has five players competing for customers and is showing healthy growth, while the fixed-line and Internet markets are virtually untapped. The recent entry of two world-class international operators, MTN and Orange, is expected to drive the market forward with the introduction of convergence between fixed and mobile, voice and data services. The planned arrival of an international submarine cable promises to bring fibre-based bandwidth to Guinea for the first time which should help to lower prices and stimulate the market.

Australia - Government Policies - 2002-2008

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Since winning government in 1995, the Federal Coalition Government has introduced a range of telecommunications and IT policies, most notably the privatisation of Telstra. This report charts the key policies introduced by the Liberal-National Coalition. The national budgets from 1999 through to 2004 are all addressed here. Towards the end of this period the focus started to shift to protecting Telstra in the wake of full privatisation; however after Telstra’s CEO frank assessment of the state of telecoms firm action was taken in the form of operational separation and regional broadband funding. With the arrival of a new government in late 2007, 2008 is expected to be a watershed year in new government policies.
